A PLACE I LONG TO BE

Written by Ifenaike Micheal Ayomipo

there’s a place i long to be

a place where my father’s sigh isn’t the byproduct of the multitude of losses in his head

not a place where psalms are battered

so they limp out of my mother’s mouth

mother’s mouth became a bandstand for worship songs

when the ground hosted sister’s body

and i wished i could run back into mother’s womb

and dissolve into a stream of blood

my eyes are tired of seeing loss leaving praise in place of threnodies

the greatest war is body wanting to submit to grief

but you’re holding it back

grief birthing a war

war birthing another war

isn’t what they teach

to compare and contrast our loss with other people’s own?

but loss is loss

no matter what the preacher calls it.
